August is Attendance Awareness Month

Phoenix #1 proclaimed August “Attendance Awareness” month because we understand the strong relationship between good attendance at school and student achievement.
In fact, studies show that students with poor attendance in the early years tend to struggle with achievement throughout the rest of their school years. And, good attendance leads to high school graduation!

For more information, please read here about the effects of poor attendance.

2017 Flu Letter

February 21, 2017

The flu is hitting us late this year compared to the rest of the United States.   A combination of the following symptoms could mean you have the flu:

  • Fever (usually high)
  • Headache
  • Feeling very tired
  • Dry cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Muscle aches
  • Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are more common in children

In our schools we have been seeing a lot of students with fevers, coughing and with vomiting. We need to work together to keep our students healthy. The most important way to prevent the flu is to keep hands clean. We need to wash our hands often and thoroughly with soap and water. If this is not possible, then hand sanitizer can be used. Other measures to keep in mind to stay healthy include:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and discard the tissue, or use the inside of your elbow to block the cough/sneeze.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Do not return to school until you are fever free for at least 24 hours and have not used fever-reducing medications during those 24 hours.
  • Since the flu is contagious both before and after symptoms begin and end, it is best to stay at home until you are fully well and not experiencing a fever, vomiting or diarrhea at least 24 hours.

The best protection from the flu is receiving your flu shot. It is not too late to do this. To locate clinic near you visit www.211Arizona.org/flu or call 211 within Arizona or toll free 1-877-211-8661 from anywhere.

Since you are contagious the day before you feel ill until the symptoms stop, it is best to stay home during this time of illness to help control the spread of the flu at school.

Thank you for your efforts in keeping all of our children healthy,

Lynette Wiltgen MSN, RN

Health and Wellness Coordinator

Febrero 21, 2017

  • Fiebre (generalmente alta)
  • Dolor de cabeza
  • Sentirse muy cansado
  • Tos seca
  • Dolor de garganta
  • Flujo nasal o nariz tapada

Watch your tax dollars in action with the Dunbar Drama Club

dunbar-tc-graphic-with-banner

In order to put on a play, the Dunbar Drama Club must buy the rights to a play. These rights are only valid for one performance! Last year, with the help of tax credit donations, the Dunbar Drama Club was able to buy the rights to The Jungle Book. This was the first ever play put on by the Drama Club. The students were so excited; they want to continue this new tradition with another play this year. The club benefits from tax credit donations to help with purchasing costumes and props for the performance as well.

Goal

The goal of this club is to allow students time to be have fun and be creative while, learning practical skills like, planning, preparation, and public speaking. Students are able to learn lifelong lessons like the importance of team work and self-confidence in a imaginative atmosphere.

Value to Students

Many inner city schools are losing funding for the arts. The Dunbar Drama Club gives students the chance to learn about themselves and fellow students in an artistic way that they might not otherwise do. Students are also able to make meaningful relationships with peers in other grades. The Drama Club brings the entire school together!

How to Donate

Please consider making a tax credit donation today! You can donate at Dunbar’s front office or online at http://phxschools.org/district/tax-credit/

September/October Newsletter

Hello, Dunbar Dragons!

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK…
A Time to Reflect and Celebrate…As the old saying goes, “Time flies when you’re having fun!” Looking back to August, we’ve been through a few challenges, but have many, many celebrations. Challenges help us to reflect on change. Celebrations help us to recognize that change has occurred and we’re on the right track. So, let’s celebrate today our growth this school year academically, socially, and as a community. Finding something to celebrate everyday will boost our efforts and keep us motivated to teach and learn. One celebration that has consumed my mind is for the Dunbar Dragon Basketball Team. Coach Harvey and her assistants worked hard with the students through dedicated practices and ultimately a game winning season. The team depicts our notion of what hard work, dedication, and perseverance will accomplish if you put in the time… A Winner !! Developing their Growth Mindset that “Anything is Possible if You Try” should be utilized throughout the school. Thank you to Coach Harvey and the Dunbar Dragon Basketball Team for showing us how we should perform as a school! Work hard, work together, work with the end in mind, work continuously, and work untiringly. We are Dunbar Dragons! We go to Dunbar School! And we have FIRE POWER!!
